What is Reiki?
Reiki is an ancient and natural healing system that channels universal life-force energy to achieve deep relaxation, inner peace and total well-being. It was founded by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui.
The word Reiki means 'Universal Life' (Rei) and 'Energy' (Ki). The 'Universal Life Energy' has as many names as there are cultures: 'Prana' in Indian Yoga , 'Chi' (Qi) in Taoism, 'the Light' or 'Holy Ghost' in Christian cultures, 'Ruach' in Hebrew and 'Baraka' in Islamic Countries.
The universal life-force energy is around us, inside of us, and penetrates everything. It is the omni-present energy, which has been there forever and will be there forever. The universal life energy is invisible to the human eye and there are (not yet) technologies to make it visible. Even though the energy is invisible, we’re able to feel it.
The fields of medicine and science recognize that the human body is made of energy. Blockages in the body's energy fields can create discomfort or disease. Reiki makes use of a specific technique to help clear these blockages. A Reiki practitioner lays hands on or above certain points of the body, which allows energy to flow freely again and balances the natural energy within the body.
It is easy to forget the importance of the healing power of touch in our high-tech dominated and fast-moving world. Reiki is a wonderful example of how touch can positively influence our bodies and create deep relaxation and total well-being. There are already a respectable number of hospitals that are incorporating Reiki as a complementary therapy into their roster of patient services. It helps patients to heal faster with less pain, and reduces negative effects of medication.
